Uh oh! U.S. Olympic swimmers Ryan Lochte and James Feigen were indicted on charges of false reporting of a crime, the Federal Police of Brazil confirmed on Thursday, Aug. 18. Does this mean Ryan will be extradited and they’ll get locked up in prison? We’ve got all the details!
Ryan Lochte and James Feigen are in big trouble! After reportedly faking a story about being robbed at gunpoint while in Rio, authorities have now officially indicted the U.S. Olympic swimmers on charges of false reporting of a crime, ABC News claims.
This comes after police asserted that Ryan, James, and two other swimmers, who said they were held up at gunpoint in Rio, were not robbed. What police actually believe happened is one or more of the U.S. Olympic swimmers vandalized a bathroom at a gas station after leaving a party on Sunday morning, Aug. 14. Mirrors and other things were damaged, according to police, but the swimmers allegedly refused to stay at the gas station, when security asked their taxi not to leave. A translator is believed to have intervened between the security guards and the athletes before the swimmers left some money.
Ryan, who is now in America, and James, who was detained along with two other swimmers (Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger) in Rio, insist they were held up by armed gunmen until they handed over hundreds of dollars. Gunnar and Jack have since allegedly claimed Ryan made up the entire story.
The investigation is still ongoing.
Gunnar, Jack and James “are cooperating with authorities and in the process of scheduling a time and place today to provide further statements to the Brazilian authorities,” U.S. Olympic Committee spokesman Patrick Sandusky said, according to ABC News. “All are represented by counsel and being appropriately supported by the USOC and the U.S. Consulate in Rio.”
