Even a summer full of sun and endless hairstyles for her ‘Revival’ tour can’t break Selena Gomez’s locks. The singer has clearly been taking care of her hair, so we consulted the experts on how to copy her shiny strands and restore your hair’s health after the summer. Despite our best intentions, we definitely slacked when it came to caring for our hair this summer. In addition to all of the heat styling our hair has had to endure in order to get the perfect beachy waves, it’s also been exposed to the sun, ocean and pool, which can dry out even the healthiest hair. If all of this sounds too familiar, don’t freak out. We spoke with AJ Lordet, Senior Colorist at Pierre Michel Salon in NYC, to help save our strands.
In order to help restore some of the moisture that the heat sucks out of your hair, AJ tells us that there are a few things you should have been doing (and can still do during the last few weeks of summer). “Moisture masks throughout summer will help make sure your hair stays in good condition,” AJ says. “[And] try washing or rinsing your hair with tap water before and after a swim in the pool to avoid the chlorine sticking to the hair,” she adds since chlorine is a form of bleach that will especially dry hair out.
If the damage is already done, AJ says you can still fix lifeless locks. “It’s extremely important to trim your split ends,” AJ tells us, explaining that once they’ve split, they’ll just get worse no matter how many conditioning treatments you try. To get rid of all of the damage at once, AJ says to go for a trendy lob or bob cut that will eliminate all of your split ends (think Kim Kardashian‘s blunt lob), and to consider going darker since “darker colors tend to hide dry hair better than blonde.”
You can also steal Selena’s trick to make sure your hair stays healthy by using a hydrating shampoo. To combat all of the heat styling her hair endures, Sel swears by the Pantene Expert Intense Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner.
