After being accused of throwing major shade at her own teammate, Simone Biles, gold medalist Gabby Douglas has opened up about how ‘hurtful’ this Olympics has been as she feels she is being criticized for everything she does.
All eyes have been on Gabby Douglas, 20, since she won gold with The Fab Five gymnastics team at the Olympics in 2012. Unfortunately, being America’s sweetheart has completely backfired on her in the 2016 games, as the gymnast has been under constant scrutiny — so much so that she is avoiding the internet at all costs.
“I’ve been trying to stay off the internet because it is so much negativity,” Gabby confessed to Yahoo! in a new interview. “When they talk about my hair or me not putting my hand on my heart or me being salty in the stands and, you know, really criticizing me… It doesn’t feel good. For me, it was a little bit hurtful.”
As the interview continued, Gabby went into detail about how she’s noticed that the nation has seemingly turned on her. She seems heartbroken by the entire deal, as it’s obviously taken a toll on her as the games come to an end.
“At first they were like, ‘Good job, you’re in the Olympics,'” she explained. “And then they kind of turn on you. It was hurtful. It was kind of a lot to deal with and you kind of have to stay away from that … [With] everything I had to go through and everything I have gone through, it’s just been a lot this time around.”
In case you missed it, Gabby has been receiving a lot of flack through the Rio Olympics, especially after she was caught appearing “salty” over her teammate, Simone Biles, 19, winning gold in the all-around. Gabby later apologized for the expression she made, claiming that she does nothing but “support” hear teammates, including Aly Raisman, 22.
