The first week of the 2016 Olympics have been incredible to watch, so HollywoodLife.com is rounding up the top moments… including Michael Phelps’ epic angry face, Simone Biles’ stunning gold medal win, and so many more!
Whether it was good, bad or ugly… the 2016 Rio Olympics were chock full of exciting moments. Whether viewers were sitting on the edge of their seat hoping to witness a gold medal win, or screaming in agony over the sight of a nasty broken bone, there were plenty of moments in the first week of the games that gave everyone something to talk about. So here are just a few of our faves!
Let’s start with the most obvious, which has to be 19-year-old Simone Biles wowing the world with her all-around gymnastics win. The Olympic newcomer totally dominated the category, and was also apart of another exciting moment: The Final Five (aka Team USA’s women’s gymnastics team) winning gold!
We could never forget to include Michael Phelps, 31, throwing major shade at one of his rivals, South Africa’s Chad Le Clos. The 22-time gold medalist sat and glared at Chad as he bounced around during warm up, leaving Michael looking angrier and angrier as the seconds went by. It’s pretty hilarious, and thankfully we have video:
The 2016 Rio Olympics highlights also include some amazing historical moments. For example, Team Refugee competed for the first time ever and featured a group of athletes that were forced to flee their countries. When the team arrived to the games by walking into Maracana Stadium during the opening ceremony, they received a warm standing ovation from the crowd. It was pretty incredible to watch!
However, we can’t review the most talked about moments without including the painful ones. It’s no secret that some of the sports are insanely dangerous, and that only proved true during the 2016 games. It all started with French gymnast, Samir Ait Said, when he broke his leg while trying to stick his landing during the vault competition. Video shows Samir hitting the pad and then immediately falling to the floor after his shin snapped in half. Ouch.
There was also the terrifying crash that left Dutch cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten unconscious on the side of the road in the middle of a race. Annemiek lost control of her bike as she rounded a curve while in the lead, and she could be seen rolling off the road and flipping over into a ditch. Thankfully, she later sent a message from the hospital letting her fans know that she was recovering despite being devastated over her loss.
