JLo may be playing a cop on ‘Shades of Blue,’ but she’s also on the other end of the spectrum in this new role. HBO is officially creating a film about the rise and fall of notorious drug lord Griselda Blanco, played by the singer herself.
The drug lord known as “The Cocaine Godmother” revolutionized the U.S. drug trade during the 1970s and 1980s and became the most powerful female cartel member of all time, so it seemed like the perfect fit for HBO. The network is currently developing a film, our sister publication Variety reports, set to star Jennifer Lopez — one of most powerful female stars. No other cast members have been announced at this time.
“I’ve been fascinated by the life of this corrupt and complicated woman for many years,” Jennifer said in a release about the HBO film. “The idea of teaming with HBO felt like the perfect fit for finally bringing Griselda’s story to life.”
The reference to Griselda has been made many times in pop culture of the years; Jada Pinkett Smith claims that she has based her Gotham character Fish Mooney on Griselda; The Godmother is also a film in the works starring Catherine Zeta-Jones in the lead role as Griselda. So, JLo will definitely be joining quite the collection.
JLo will also executive produce with Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, Julie Yorn and Rick Yorn. Alex Pettyfer, Priscilla Porianda and Patrick Walmsley will co-executive produce.
Somehow Jennifer has free time on her schedule, while we’re unsure how. She’s currently filming her second season of NBC’s Shades of Blue in NYC. She’s also set to the be the executive producer on the new dance competition show, World of Dance which is currently casting.
