Missy Franklin is not having a good run at the Olympics. The gold medalist, who was a standout at the 2012 Olympic Games, shockingly finished 13th out of 16 swimmers in the 200-meter freestyle semifinal on Aug. 8. Click to WATCH the jaw-dropping race.
Missy’s terrible finish is something no one expected to see from the gold medalist. Because the 21-year-old finished 13th in her semifinal heat, she failed to advance to the finals of the 200-meter freestyle. She finished her heat in 1 minute, 57.56 seconds, which was a slower time than she performed in the afternoon preliminaries. CLICK TO WATCH!
Missy knows she didn’t perform to the best of her ability, but she’s not letting this unfortunate finish stand in the way of other possible victories. “It wasn’t there, but I did the best that I could,” she said after the race, according to the Denver Post. “I still have the 200 back (Thursday), so I need to keep my head up and keep doing what I can every day to make sure I’m the best I can be right now.”
At the Olympic Trials in Omaha earlier in the year, Missy only qualified in two of her four individual events. She was one of the stars of the 2012 London Olympics, her Olympic debut, and won a total of five medals. Four of those medals were gold medals.
Despite this latest shocking finish, Missy still has a chance to win gold at the Rio Olympics. She will compete in the 200-meter backstroke and 800-meter freestyle.
Teammate Katie Ledecky, 19, has taken Missy’s place as the breakout star of the 2016 Rio Olympics. She’s already won gold in the 400-meter freestyle. She finished 2nd in the 200-meter freestyle semifinals. The finals of the 200-meter freestyle will be held on Aug. 9.
