Has the Olympics meme queen met her match?! McKayla Maroney rose to fame after the London Olympics for not just her stellar gymnastics skills, but her incredibly meme-able scowl. Now, Michael Phelps is the new meme on the block, and he’s coming for her crown! See her reaction.
McKayla Maroney’s twisted scowl is easily the most famous meme to ever come out of the Olympics, but now everyone is talking about a new viral image: Michael Phelps looking enraged while preparing for a race in the 2016 Rio games. So, how does McKayla feel about possibly being stripped of her title? WATCH THE HILARIOUS VIDEO RIGHT HERE.
“I looked at his pictures and I was like YES! Go Michael! Take it, take it away! Please!” gushed McKayla to TMZ Sports. The 20-year-old gymnast apparently never loved being an internet sensation, revealing “I didn’t choose this life!”
We can’t blame her for not loving her meme. Clearly she was not expecting to be caught on camera while making the goofy face, and it’s admittedly less than flattering. McKayla shouldn’t be worried, she’s a totally stunning young lady who is an insanely talented athlete, but we get it.
And she gets it too, years after the meme started. “I’m looking at them right now,” she said of Michael’s hilarious memes. “They’re amazing, I now see why people thought it was so funny” when she was made into a meme herself. “They’re hilarious.” We think they’re hilarious, too! Michael definitely looked super intense while listening to his pump-up playlist before his Aug. 8 race, and we immediately knew that super focused rage-face would hit the web HARD.
When the reigning meme queen was asked to rate Michael’s new viral pic, she said “he would win a gold medal, for sure.” Damn! Michael you can go ahead and add that to your new collection of 20 golds. What a champ!
