How horrific is this?! Dutch cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten lost control of her bike while she was leading the women’s road race in Rio on Aug. 7, totally crashing on the side of the course and appearing unresponsive. Watch a video of the scary crash right here!
Just when it seemed Annemiek van Vleuten was going to take home the gold for the Netherlands in the women’s road race on Aug. 7, she turned a corner too quickly and crashed right into the curb. The 33-year-old flipped face-first off of her bike, not moving a muscle after landing on the shoulder — and cameras caught the entire terrifying incident as it happened.
It’s not entirely clear what happened other than the fact that Annemiek lost control on the slippery pavement while hitting one of the course’s steep downhill turns. The video really is pretty frightening, as Annemiek painfully crashes into the pavement and then appears to not be moving at all. See it all happen below:

Fortunately, the Dutch cycling federation has already confirmed that Annemiek is “okay.” Despite the fact that she wasn’t moving for several moments after her crash, she was conscious and being examined at a hospital, according to officials.
As if a horrendous crash isn’t a big enough devastation for Annemiek, the accident occurred when she was just 6 miles from crossing the finish line for the gold medal. Considering the course is a whopping 87 miles long, it’s likely she was already thinking about the big win just before the crash. On the bright side, her teammate Anna van der Breggen ended up coming from behind and taking home the gold for the Netherlands, so at least Annemiek can be happy about that! We wish her the best as she recovers!
