The ‘America’s Got Talent’ judges sent America into a frenzy when they sent Steven Brundage home in the Judge Cuts round. But after bringing him back as a wild card, Steven didn’t just prove the judges wrong — he proved he could maybe even win it all!
Performing a flawless magic trick and solving a Rubik’s cube are two skills that aren’t easy to master, but combining the two? Forget about it — that is, unless you’re Steven Brundage. As the only Rubik’s cube magician in the world, Steven certainly had an act that wouldn’t be found amidst the rest of the America’s Got Talent Season 11 contestants. So why did the judges cut him before the quarterfinals? I’ll never understand. But bringing him back as a wild card was one of the best decisions the judges have made this season, and here’s why!
For one, his fans would’ve ATTACKED the judges if Steven didn’t get a second chance. As soon as he was cut, fans immediately took to social media to petition for him to go back on AGT, whether it was outraged tweets or videos campaigning for his return. I was pretty devastated myself (he was one of my favorites from the start), but even I didn’t expect that kind of reaction from Steven’s elimination. Frankly I’m glad they took that kind of initiative since I didn’t think to do that myself!
Second, he’s extremely relatable. Unlike some of the other contestants who have inspiring stories of how they got where they are now, Steven’s reason for getting into his talent was simply that he was a pretty shy, nerdy kid growing up. He found something he was good at, which not only gave him confidence, but can now inspire others to achieve the same level of success even if they are the shy quiet types.
Third, he’s already improved since his first audition. When he first took the stage, Steven definitely came off a bit nerdy. And compared to other magician contestants like the loud jokester Jon Dorenbos, Steven’s personality was charming but quiet, which didn’t make him as memorable. But the more we see him, the more the shyness goes away, and suddenly there’s more to Steven than his adorable smile. His self-assured way of performing really has him looking more like a star and less like a shy guy-turned magician!
Last but not least, his tricks really are amazing. Not only has Steven’s confidence and showmanship clearly improved since the judges first met him (as Howie Mandel couldn’t help admitting after Steven’s live show performance), but he has managed to make the tricks a little different every time and still blow our minds. They’re better to watch than to just read about — so if you still don’t believe that he’s got what it takes to win, go watch all of his tricks and get back to me about that one!
