First Lady Michelle Obama sported her boldest beauty look yet at the White House’s state dinner on August 2. Wearing her hair in a noticeably shorter style, Michelle tried out a faux bob that was styled into a sleek finish. Get the details, ahead and let us know what you thought of her latest look.
Michelle Obama stole the show as she welcomed Singapore’s prime minister and his wife to the White House state dinner alongside husband, President Barack Obama. Wearing a strapless ivory gown by NYC-based designer Brandon Maxwell, FLOTUS matched her hair with the architectural elements of her dress by trying out a faux bob.
While we’re used to seeing Michelle with her just-below-the-shoulder length hair blown out straight or styled in polished waves (like she sported during her speech at the DNC), for her state dinner hair, she decided to switch things up.
Hairstylist Johnny Wright created a faux bob that ended just at Michelle’s ears, showing off her diamond earrings. Brushing her hair back, Johnny gave the style a more modern look thanks to its sleek finish.
For her makeup, Carl Ray wanted to create a look as classy as the first lady herself, starting with illuminated skin and a soft contour and highlight. We chatted with Carl, who told us his inspiration was a “classy, bold and beautiful” look. “I gave FLOTUS a strobe application using liquid luminizer for her beautiful glow. I love to contour and highlight.”
Bringing the focus to her eyes, Carl told us he added smokey shadows to Michelle’s eyes and created full lashes with several coats of black mascara. To finish the look, he added a soft pink lip with a high-shine finish.
