An Emirates plane with 300 on board managed to crash land safely at the Dubai International Airport on August 3, but just when all seemed finally safe, the jumbo jet burst into flames. Click through to watch the shocking footage of the emergency.
A Boeing 777 Emirates plane coming from India, crash landed at the Dubai International Airport on August 3, coasting onto the runway on the belly of the aircraft around 12:45pm local time. The experience was horrific enough, and as onlookers took footage of the miraculous landing, they witnessed something even worse: billowing black smoke from the aircraft turned into towering flames.
All 300 people on board the jumbo jet managed to escape the burning airplane safely using inflatable slides at emergency exits. There were no injuries reported among the 282 passengers and 18 crew members, and the cause of the crash is yet unknown. The passengers were 226 Indians, 24 Britons, 11 Emiratis, three Americans and three Saudi Arabians on board the plane arriving from the Indian city of Thiruvananthapuram.
It’s still unclear why the dire incident occurred at all. Air traffic control recordings, according to the Aviation Herald, showed that flight EK521 pilots approached runway 12L with no problems whatsoever, and didn’t declare an emergency until after the plane landed. The Twitter account Flight Alerts posted a video in which it appears to show one of the plane’s engines falling off while it skids onto the runway. Flight Alerts says that the plane came down onto the runway from too low of a height. However, Emirates has not confirmed this information.
“The fire began to spread rapidly and by the time the fire engines got there the entire top half of the plane was on fire,” NBC News Digital chief technology officer Krishna Bhagavathula, who was waiting in the airport terminal for a flight, told the news agency. He said that flames “seemed to be coming from the rear or back of the plane.”
