Don’t expect to see Ariana Grande belting out a song as Penny Pingleton in ‘Hairspray Live!’ when it premieres in Dec. 2016. The Grammy-nominated singer revealed the jaw-dropping reason why she won’t be getting a big solo number or original song in the live musical!
“I’m not just saying that it has literally been a dream of mine since the original Broadway cast, since Kerry Butler originated the role,” she said during the live musical’s 2016 Television Critics Association summer press tour panel. “It’s a dream come true for me. So I don’t want to change anything about the role or, you know, how she develops. I just love, I love Penny, and it’s just such a great honor to her. So I don’t want any sort of special icing or parts. This is, like, really great, and I’m so happy.”
Ariana, 23, is just the best. We love how she doesn’t want special treatment just because she’s a huge star. The character of Penny is featured in many of the musical’s biggest songs, but never has her own solo song. Executive producer Neil Meron said that it was actually Ariana’s idea not to have a big solo or original song in the live musical.
“I think one of the thrills is that Ariana wanted to play that role as written,” he added. “She really, really she felt it. She loved it.”
Neil gives major kudos to Ariana for her “artistic merit” in playing the role of Penny as it was written. Penny doesn’t get her big moment to shine in the musical until “You Can’t Stop The Beat,” the show’s final number. Neil thinks it will be a great “surprise for her audience.” Hairspray Live! will premiere Dec. 7 on NBC.
