Come on, we all mess up and least once in our lives. But does Winona Ryder regret that certain shoplifting incident that happened 15 years ago? Not necessarily. In fact, she claims the scandal actually HELPED her acting career. Keep reading to find out how!
Sure, it was probably more than a little embarrassing at the time, but Winona Ryder, 44, is looking back at her shoplifting past with a grain of salt. 15 years ago, the Stranger Things star was caught redhanded stealing from Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills, and now she’s opening up about the positives that came with such a jaw-dropping story.
“It allowed me time that I really needed,” she explains to Porter magazine. “I went back to San Francisco and got back into things that… I just had other interests, frankly. Psychologically, I must have been at a place where I just wanted to stop [acting]. I won’t get into what happened, but it wasn’t what people think. And it wasn’t like the crime of the century!”
Sounds like Winona just needed a break from Hollywood for awhile! And who could blame her? Winona was one of the hottest actresses in the late 90’s and early 2000’s with her ground-breaking roles in Heathers, Edward Scissorhands and Girl, Interrupted. And hello, she dated Johnny Depp, of course all eyes were on her. Even the Mr. Deeds small-town sweetheart admits that she was forced into a mold during the peak of her acting career and wanted to break out of it.
“People associated me with the 1990s and I wasn’t that anymore,” she continues. “And they didn’t really buy me as my age.” Remember, Winona was just a TEENAGER when she was thrown into the Hollywood scene after playing a goth adolescent in Beetlejuice. She really hit the ground running! But let’s be honest, shoplifting isn’t exactly first degree murder, and it’s not something to be held over Winona’s head forever. If anything, her career is skyrocketing more than ever — people simply can’t stop raving about Stranger Things, and season 2 has already been confirmed!
