So inspiring. Erica Smegielski’s mother Dawn was the principal of Sandy Hook Elementary and was killed while trying to protect her students. And at the DNC on July 27, a video, entitled ‘My Mother,’ played for all to see before Erica explained why Hillary Clinton is the best candidate to address our country’s gun violence epidemic.
Erica Smegielski, the daughter of slain Sandy Hook principal Dawn Hochsprung, first appeared in a Hillary Clinton campaign ad in April 2016, and on July 27, she took her support for the democratic presidential nominee to a whole new level at the Democratic National Convention.
While on the national stage, Erica said “I should not be here tonight. I don’t want to be here tonight. I should be home like so many Americans, watching on TV with my mother, as we nominate the first woman to be President of the United States. But my mom was murdered, so I’m here. I’m here for the mothers and daughters who are planning weddings, so you get to watch your daughters walk down the aisle.”
“I’m here without my mother while too many politicians cower behind the gun lobby,” she added, before saying we don’t need another Sandy Hook massacre in this country. And that’s why she’s supporting Hillary Clinton for President! Unlike Donald Trump, Hillary wants to change the gun laws in our country.
Unsurprisingly, Erica struggled to hold back tears as she talked about her mother. It was hard to watch, so we have to commend her for having the strength to come out and show her support for Hillary.
Other people who spoke on Hillary’s behalf on Day 3 of the Democratic National Convention included Star Jones, Sigourney Weaver, director Lee Daniels, and Angela Bassett. Lenny Kravitz also performed.
