Holly was the clear favorite going into the bantamweight encounter, but she was picked apart in a unanimous decision in what was another upset in the Octagon in the women’s world of UFC. The event was the main event at FOX 20 at the United Center in Chicago, and it didn’t disappoint.

It looked like Valentina had bitten off more than she can chew when she was knocked down in the first round by a charging right hand from Holly. But she rallied and had a vicious right hook that was continually hitting its target throughout the fight. Holly did attempt a takedown, but that spectacularly backfired and she ended up on her back and cut opened up on her forehead as she was taking a battering on the floor.

In the third and fourth rounds, Holly tried to kick her way to victory, hoping to catch her opponent’s jaw, but it just wasn’t working and she appeared quite lethargic. Eventually, after the full, 4 bloodied rounds, it went to the judges’ decision and they voted 49-46 in Valentina’s favor. Well done, girl.

Valentina is now hoping for her own title fight with Amanda Nunes, who recently defeated Holly’s conqueror Miesha Tate at UFC 200. She knows this is now her chance to prove herself, and in an interview after the fight she declared, “It’s very important in my career. My strategy was to do everything I know, to put all my heart, all my power, everything that I learned in more than 20 years in martial arts. And I did it today!”
