How crazy is this?! Democratic Party Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz is stepping down in the wake of a shocking email leak that revealed the party’s favoritism of Hillary Clinton. Get the details right here!
Debbie Wasserman Schultz, 49, announced on July 24 that she will officially be resigning as the Chairperson of the Democratic National Committee. Her resignation is seemingly the result of a scandal involving a leaked email thread that exposed her and the party of seemingly sabotaging Bernie Sanders‘ campaign in order for Hillary Clinton to become the Democratic party nominee.
“My first priority has always been serving the people of the 23rd district of Florida and I look forward to continuing to do that as their member of Congress for years to come. As the mother of my three amazing children and the Representative of Florida’s 23rd congressional district, I know that electing Hillary Clinton as our next president is critical for America’s future. I look forward to serving as a surrogate for her campaign in Florida and across the country to ensure her victory,” Debbie wrote in a statement.
The DPC continued, “Going forward, the best way for me to accomplish those goals is to step down as Party Chair at the end of this convention. As Party Chair, this week I will open and close the Convention and I will address our delegates about the stakes involved in this election not only for Democrats, but for all Americans.”
Bernie supporters (and Bernie himself) were frustrated with Debbie throughout most of his campaign, as they viewed her as impartial and were even speculative that the Democratic party members were rigging the campaign so that Hillary would end up winning the party’s nomination. It wasn’t until July 22 that the Bernie supporters’ concerns came to fruition, when hacked emails appeared on WikiLeaks that showed some of the party’s staff scheming ways to hurt Sanders’ campaign in the primary contest.
Although Debbie won’t officially be losing her role as Chairperson until the end of the Democratic National Convention on July 28, she has already been replaced as convention chair by Rep. Marcia Fudge from Ohio. The convention begins July 25 in Philadelphia and concludes July 28. It’s unclear whether Debbie will address the emails at the convention.
