The premiere of ‘Star Trek Beyond’ at Comic-Con was bittersweet for the film’s cast, who were still reeling from Anton Yelchin’s tragic death. To celebrate Anton and mourn his loss, the cast and audience held a moment of silence. Click to watch.
“There’s something wrong tonight,” said Star Trek Beyond’s producer, J.J. Abrams, 50, said at the film’s Comic-Con premiere on July 20, per Buzzfeed. “There is someone missing tonight. Anton [Yelchin].” To help with the lingering grief over losing such a talented actor (and beloved friend), all those in attendance held a moment of silence.
San Diego suddenly fell quiet, as Star Trek fans paid their respects to Anton. After a minute where no one said a single word, J.J. spoke up. “Thank you,” he said, before he and the cast left the stage. This loving gesture was extra special, because Anton’s parents were attending the premiere. They also got to witness how much their son was loved by all who worked with him.
Anton’s death from a freak automobile accident outside his San Fernando Valley continues to weigh heavily on the hearts of Star Trek fans and his fellow actors. Following Anton’s passing, Zoe Saldana, 38, penned a touching tribute to the man she called “funny, humble, honest and undeniably talented.” Even while remembering him on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Zoe couldn’t help but get emotional over such a heartbreaking loss.
Fans attending the premiere (and those who see Star Trek Beyond in theaters) knew that this movie will be the last time they see Anton reprise the role of Chekov on the big screen. It will likely be the last time Chekov appears in a Star Trek movie because J.J. said “there’s no recasting” the role, and that Anton deserves better than getting replaced.
If that moment of silence ahead of the movie’s Comic-Con premiere proves, there’s no replacing Anton – not in the movie or in the hearts of Star Trek fans everywhere.
Are you glad that the cast and crew of Star Trek Beyond held a moment of silence for Anton, HollywoodLifers? Did watching the video give you chills?
