This is so shocking! A Pokemon GO player was shot to death on July 20 after he allegedly broke into a home to catch a Pokemon in Chiquimila, Guatemala, according to reports. Jerson Lopez de Leon, 18, was gunned down, while his cousin Daniel Moises Picen, 17, was badly wounded.
Two teens found themselves in danger after playing Pokemon GO, and one lost his life, the New York Post reports. Reports conflict about exactly when Jerson Lopez de Leon was killed, leaving it unclear as to whether the shooting was directly related to the teens playing Pokemon GO.
The Mirror says the teen was shot after he and his cousin broke into a private residence to catch a Pokemon in the augmented reality game, while The Independent reports he was killed in an ambush while walking down the street, hunting for Pokemon. Local reports indicated that officials were searching for individuals seen racing away from the scene in a van, and twenty shell casings were found at the scene. If local reports are correct, this would be the first death related to the game — that’s just terrible.
“He was already in bed when his cousin sent him a message asking him to go out and download a game a few blocks from the house,” De Leon’s mother Rosalina told reporters. So awful.
This is just the latest in a series of horror stories surrounding the game. Stampedes in public parks, cases of armed robbery and one player stumbling upon a dead body while playing the game have all made headlines, and since it seems the addicting app won’t be going away anytime soon, we urge anyone playing to have fun, but to use caution and good judgment.
