Zaevion Dobson, 15, was tragically murdered while shielding three girls from gunfire during a random shooting last Dec. — and now, his heroism is being remembered, as his family took home the Arthur Ashe Courage Award on his behalf at the 2016 ESPYs on July 13. Below are a list of things we think you should absolutely know about Zaevion.
1.) Zaevion was killed while saving 3 of his female classmates.
The teen valiantly rescued three underage girls on the evening of Dec. 17, 2015, by blocking them from a spray of bullets shot by a chaos-driven gunman. Zaevion sadly died on the scene after he was shot in the head, however his audacious act will never be forgotten.
2.) The brave teen was a stellar and promising football player.
Zaevion wore his Fulton High School Falcons jersey with pride. He was a driven player who constantly tried his absolute best. The teen can be seen rocking his number “24” in photographs.
3.) Zaevion received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2016 ESPY Awards.
His award was presented by NBA star Steph Curry 28, Zaevion’s mother, Zenobia Dobson, and his two brothers, Zackelyn Dobson and Markastin Taylor. Zenobia led her heartfelt speech with: “We feel blessed and honored that our Zaevion joins the ranks of this award’s honorees.”
4.) Zaevion’s cousin was killed four months later after being struck dead by a bullet.
His cousin was also slain due to a deranged gunman after a drive-by shooting. “He was an innocent victim,” Zenobia said at the 2016 ESPY Awards. She added, “We need to take a stand against gun violence throughout America.” Zaevion’s mom continued: “I’m here to urge all of you to join the movement tonight to save innocent lives.”
5.) Faith Gordon, one of the girls he saved, got a tattoo of him wearing a football jersey with a Superman insignia.
Faith declared on Twitter, “You’re my hero, I’ll never forget you.” Kiara Rucker, one of the other teenage girls who Zaevion protected, told CBS affiliate WVLT at the time of the attack, “If it wasn’t for Zaevion, if he would have just ran off the porch, we would have probably been shot.”
