John Cena admitted he was an unlikely choice to host the 2016 ESPYS. Yet, at the start of the July 13 ceremony, the Superstar teased LeBron James, Peyton Manning and more by pointing out how there’s no difference between professional sports and the WWE! Click to watch.
John Cena, 39, really can do it all. He can wrestle, he can act and now, he can host an awards show like the 2016 ESPYS. After the show opened up with a heartfelt plea for the end of senseless violence, John lightened the mood with some wrestling-themed jokes — and he was hilarious!
“Why the hell did they get me to host this thing?” John said at the start of the July 13 awards show. As a pro-wrestler, John wondered why the event didn’t get a comedian or a sports star. “Me hosting the ESPYS is crazy – or is it genius?” John then revealed how sports and pro-wrestling are more alike than people think!
“I’m going to start with the NBA. Cleveland won something. That is impossible!” John said. “There’s no way that wasn’t scripted.” John also explained out how LeBron James started off as a good guy, turned into a bad guy by going to the Miami Heat, before turning face again. “And you left the NBA hanging – what are they going to do without a bad guy? Exactly what [the WWE] do, we make a new one.” Cue picture of Kevin Durant in a Golden State Warriors uniform. Yikes!
John then recalled how Peyton Manning defeated his nemesis (Tom Brady, naturally) before riding off into the sunset with “the love of his life” — aka Papa John. John even showed how NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is just like Vince McMahon! “Maybe we have more in common than you think,” John said.

That was actually pretty funny. Way to go, John! The WWE superstar is the first wrestler ever to host the ESPYS. Usually, it goes to comedians like Joel McHale, 44, whose Justin Bieber, 22, joke kicked off the 2015 ceremony. Clearly, John the right choice for this year’s host!
“I’m not ignorant to how sports entertainment is perceived,” he told ABC. “So, an opportunity like this from ESPN to kind of captain the ship on the biggest night of sports and entertainment…it’s vehicles like that that can help change perception.”
Well, some perceptions were definitely changed! And that was just the start of the night. Who knows what other hilarious smackdowns John will deliver throughout the night. There’s plenty of show left to go!
What do you think about John’s opening of the 2016 ESPYS, HollywoodLifers? Did you think it was hilarious? Did you chuckle?
