This is absolutely devastating. Two commuter trains collided on a single-track line in Italy on July 12, killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens more, and a picture from the scene shows just how awful the crash was.
12 people are dead and dozens more are injured after two trains crashed on a commuter line in Puglia, Italy on July 12. The head-on collision caused several cars to crumple together, and the wreckage left in the aftermath is quite hard to look at. So heartbreaking.
The two commuter trains, which included four cars each, collided head-on around 11:05 a.m. while traveling on a single track, the Associated Press confirms. The crash took place between the towns of Ruvo di Puglia and Corato, as the train was traveling through an olive grove. At least a dozen people have been confirmed dead, according to firefighters.
A photo from the scene shows the front two cars in each train completely smashed and forced off the track, leaving an absolute mess of rubble in the surrounding area. Some of the cars are so wrecked, in fact, that there’s nothing left of them but a pile of debris. Rescue workers quickly worked to pull victims from the wreckage, but dozens were already injured from the impact.
At least one child was on-board, who survived the crash and was taken to the hospital to have injuries tended to. The country’s prime minister has vowed to make sure thorough investigations take place so a cause of this tragic accident can be determined.
Both trains were reportedly traveling at high speeds when the collision happened, and officials fear the number of deaths could rise as more bodies may still possibly be discovered in the wreckage.
