This is horrible! Cristiano Ronaldo, 31, suffered an incredibly serious knee injury during Portugal’s Euro 2016 Final match on July 9. The Portuguese soccer legend just couldn’t continue playing and had to be substituted and taken off on a stretcher. Terrible news!
The incident happened shortly before the 10th minute when Cristiano collided with France’s Dimitri Payet quite innocently. There was no malice, but it floored the forward who immediately fell to the ground and signaled to be substituted out of the game.
There were multiple attempts to get Cristiano back on the pitch, his knee was strapped by the team’s physio, but he looked far from comfortable as he limped around. After all, a 50% fit Cristiano is worth taking a chance on if you need to win a big final.
But eventually, Cristiano collapsed again in the 24th minute, and his game was sadly over. It meant that he couldn’t break the European Championship goalscoring record, and Portugal had lost their best player in their most important game.
It’s just a real pity that the biggest soccer game of the year had to slightly tainted by the loss of its best player on the pitch. What’s even more shocking is it takes a lot for Cristiano to come off injured in a game, so this must be pretty serious.
