Music legend Chaka Khan has revealed that she’s entering rehab to battle a drug addiction. Chaka is hooked on fentanyl, the same drug that killed her friend Prince, and his death has inspired her to change.
Chaka Khan, 63, and her sister Taka Boom (aka Yvonne Stevens), have both entered an intensive rehabilitation and aftercare program to help fight drug addiction, the singer told the Associated Press on July 10. The Grammy winner has been battling an addiction to the painkiller fentanyl, which is the same drug that Prince overdosed on in April. The death of her beloved friend is what sparked her to finally address the problem and get help!
“Unfortunately, I will miss concert appearances over the summer,” she said in a statement to the Associated Press. “However, it’s vital that I put my health and well-being first. I know that I am disappointing some of my fans, but I also know they would want me to recover and be well and healthy.”
Chaka has been abusing the same opioid painkiller that Prince was addicted to before his death. Her longtime friend accidentally overdosed on fentanyl on April 21, and was found dead in his Minnesota home. Chaka did not specify why her sister is entering rehab, only that the siblings “agreed we would take this journey together and support each other through the recovery.”
“The tragic death of Prince has had us both rethinking and reevaluating our lives and priorities,” Chaka told the AP. “We knew it was time to take action to save our lives. My sister and I would like to thank everyone for their support, love and prayers.”
