Country superstar Garth Brooks, 54, made his triumphant return to New York City to play his first concerts in nearly 20 years, but the night wasn’t all a total party as he paid an emotional tribute to the five police officers in Dallas who were slaughtered by a sniper July 7. Garth dedicated his 2014 hit “People Loving People” to Dallas, saying “It’s the only answer.” The performance couldn’t have come at a better time as the song his about people coming together through love to combat evil. After the events that have occurred with fatal police shootings in Louisiana and Minnesota, followed by a sniper attack on police at a Dallas protest July 7 that left five officers dead, the message is desperately needed.
The chorus goes “People loving people/That’s the enemy of everything that’s evil/Ain’t no quick fix at the end of a needle/It’s just people loving people.” It also includes such timely lyrics like We fear what we don’t understand/And we’ve been scared since time began/All the colors and the cultures/Circle ’round us on a spindle/It’s a complicated riddle/But the solution is so simple/It’s People Loving People. Oh man, those words are SO needed right now after the dark events of the past few days.

Garth hasn’t played in the Big Apple since his concert 19 years ago in Central Park, so returning to play two nights of sold out shows at Yankee Stadium was a pretty big deal for all of his New York fans. On the Facebook page for the concert, some said that they shook the hand of every NYPD officer they came across when entering the venue after the unfathomable tragedy in Dallas.
