Azealia Banks is proudly defending her choice to bleach her skin. The rapper even compared the process to wearing hair extensions or getting plastic surgery during a recent Facebook Live video rant. Watch the clip, here.
Azealia Banks, 24, is no stranger to controversy and her latest decision to lighten her skin has led to plenty of positive and negative feedback from fans. However, the “Ice Princess” rapper is holding strong to her views in a Facebook Live video released on July 1. She claimed that her physical alteration is no different than wearing “30-inch” hair weaves or going under the knife.
Azealia recorded herself, while candidly discussing her bold choice to change her skin tone. “I don’t really think it’s important to discuss the cultural significance of skin bleaching anymore. Just as black people in this world, you assimilate, and there are things you accept, not just out of necessity but things become norm because they just happen all the time,” she said before adding, “Nobody was upset when I was wearing 30-inch weaves. What’s the difference between getting a nose job and changing your skin color? You guys loved it.”
The female MC also voiced more of her thoughts on the matter in a written post on July 5, stating: “People need to stop giving white women credit for anything black women want to do with their beauty. White women aren’t the only naturally lighter skinned women in the world.”
She continued: “No one gives black women ANY credit for all of the looks, features, and beauty styles white women take from black women.” At the very least, Azealia can definitely be credited for speaking her mind with brutal honesty. Several of her fans called her a hypocrite due to the comments she’s made about “cultural appropriation” to people like Iggy Azalea, 26.
Azealia last made headlines for taking a stand against former One Directioner, Zayn Malik, 23. Azealia was pretty ticked when she had her Twitter account suspended momentarily for attacking the “Pillowtalk” crooner with a series of racial slurs, i.e. “f–king twinks.” Azealia did later apologize, however, and recently revealed that she plans to explain the differences of skin bleaching, skin lightening, skin brightening and skin whitening in an upcoming article.
