Wow! Erykah Badu and Bilal totally blew viewers away with their epic and soulful Prince tributes at the 2016 BET Awards. And while both singers’ vocals were impressive, we just couldn’t get enough of their intense passion! It was truly unforgettable!
There’s no question that Erykah Badu, 45, is the queen of neo soul — especially after tonight’s moving performance at the BET Awards! The singer-songwriter definitely did Prince proud as she belted out the lyrics to his hit “The Ballad of Dorothy Parker.” But even better, the legend was joined on stage by singer Bilal, 36, who sang “Beautiful Ones.” And the artist DEFINITELY gave the performance his all — even ending up on the floor by the end of his set. Amazing!
Appearing in a white faux fur coat, a black beret, and leather pants, Erykah totally commanded the stage as she performed her tribute to Prince. She sang a gorgeous rendition of “The Ballad of Dorothy Parker” from 1987’s classic Sign O’ the Times LP, and totally left the audience stunned when she finished. What a voice!
After Erykah’s piece, Bilal took over the stage and sang his own version of Purple Rain’s “The Beautiful Ones,” which he nailed in a near-flawless falsetto! The artist was SO into it too actually that he even got onto the floor while singing! Now THAT’S hard to do!
But overall, we just love how Erykah’s sultry voice was perfect for her song’s jazzy melody, and the band – who have actually played the song before at other Prince tributes — matched the song’s arrangement perfectly! It was all such a flawless performance.
And honestly, we’re not even surprised, after all, Erykah’s unique voice has been wooing audiences since her triple-platinum debut album, Baduizm, which was released back in 1997. And we just love how the Dallas-born singer’s music effortlessly blends R&B and jazz yet has a hip hop sensibility. There’s no doubt that her originality has secured her place as one of today’s most interesting performers!
And let’s not forget when, as host, she publicly dissed Iggy Azalea, 26, at the 2015 Soul Train Awards! It all went down during Erykah’s opening monologue when she pretended to call up celebrities and invite them to the show. Apparently the diss was meant to emphasize that rap was more or less “banned” from the Soul Train Awards because the show focuses on R&B artists instead.
“Uh yes? Who is this? Iggy Azalea?” Erykah said to the crowd. “Yeah, hey. Oh no no no no, you can come, ’cause what you doin’ is definitely not rap.” Ouch! But at least Erykah left the shade at home this time and just focused on her music.
Tell us, HollywoodLifers — were you impressed by Erykah’s killer performance? Sound off!
