Angel Colon went through the most horrifying experience of his life when he was shot multiple times by Omar Mateen during the tragic Orlando shootings on June 12, but he has bravely opened up and told his story. Here’s everything you need to know.
Just two days after the Orlando shootings, survivor Angel Colon appeared on live television in a press conference with his doctors to reveal the terrifying ordeal he went through at Pulse Nightclub on June 12. Get to know the heroic survivor here.
1. He’s originally from Puerto Rico
Angel hails from Puerto Rico, then moved to Boston before relocating to Florida, which is where he was living at the time of the attack.
2. He was shot multiple times
Omar Mateen first shot Angel three times in the leg, so he was unable to get up and run away from the scene. He was trampled over as the chaos inside the club continued, but thought he was safe when the shooter went into another room. However, Omar came back and began firing more shots at the lifeless bodies on the floor to make sure they were dead. He only hit Angel in the hand and hip, though, and Angel miraculously survived.
3. He was dragged to safety by an unidentified hero
Angel doesn’t know who it was who dragged him from the club, but he credits the mystery man with saving him. Unfortunately, his savior could not carry him, and instead had to drag him, painfully, across the floor. Angel recalled running over broken glass, cutting up his entire back and behind, before he got in an ambulance.
4. He may have saved his friend’s life during the shooting
Angel was dancing with his friend Jeannette McCoy when Omar entered the venue and started firing shots. “The only reason I’m not dead is because the bullet he took in his back probably would have been in my back,” Jeannette recalled.
5. He needs our help
Angel needed surgery after being shot, but unfortunately, he has no insurance, which will make paying medical bills a nightmare. His friend, Jordan, set up a GoFundMe page where you can donate to the cause — CHECK IT OUT HERE.
