As several families anxiously wait to find out if their loved ones survived the horrific mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando on June 12, authorities identified the first seven victims. City, state, and federal officials are working endlessly to identify as many of the 50 victims as quickly as possible.
In a blog post that will continue to be updated as police identify the 50 victims of the tragic shooting, the city of Orlando announced the first seven individuals who have been named: Edward Sotomayor Jr., 34, Stanley Almodovar III, 23, Luis Omar Ocasio-Capo, 20, Juan Ramon Guerrero, 22, Eric Ivan Ortiz-Rivera, 36, Peter O. Gonzalez-Cruz, 22, and Luis S. Vielma, 22. As revealed in the blog post, these individuals’ families have been contacted.
“On this very difficult day, we offer heartfelt condolences to today’s victims and their families,” the City of Orlando wrote in a statement on its website. “Our City is working tirelessly to get as much information out to the families so they can begin the grieving process. Please keep the following individuals in your thoughts and prayers. #PrayforOrlando.”
Although the victims are starting to be identified, the city tweeted a request for Orlando residents to hold off on holding vigils for those who have been identified as dead or still are missing. As authorities work to identify the rest of the 50 victims, the city suggested that the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Downtown Orlando as an interim memorial location.
The gunman in the shooting, identified as Omar Mateen (who was killed in a shootout with police), took the 50 innocent lives and injured 53 others when he opened fire in the gay nightclub in the early hours of June 12. The killing spree is the worst mass shooting in United States history. Our hearts go out to the loved ones of the victims of this terribly sad tragedy.
