This is so scary. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, as the man responsible for the attack hinted it in a phone call right before opening fire. Get the eerie details right here.
Yet another U.S. shooting has been linked back to ISIS. After Omar Mateen shot up Pulse Nightclub in Orlando in the early hours of June 12 taking 50 innocent lives, the terror group have reportedly announced that Omar’s killing spree was their doing. While this has yet to be 100 percent confirmed, it’s certainly a scary possibility.
Just moments before Omar ran into the nightclub and began shooting, he was supposedly on the phone swearing allegiance to the leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in a call with 911, according to NBC News. The outlet reported that Omar didn’t seem to have any direct ties with ISIS, but he was a follower of ISIS propaganda and — perhaps the most scary part — he mentioned the Tsarnaev brothers (otherwise known as the “Boston Marathon Bombers”) prior to opening fire himself.
It’s still unclear what triggered Omar’s rampage, especially because he lived about two hours south of Orlando. He has been on federal agents’ watch list since 2013, when his coworkers reported that he made “offensive” comments about radical Islamic propaganda. Although it was ultimately determined that there was no need to monitor Omar, clearly that changed three years later. With all of these connections to terrorism, investigators are still working to determine what pushed Omar to so such a horrific thing, and whether religious extremism was a major motivator.
Even if ISIS actually wasn’t involved in the tragic shooting at the gay nightclub — which is the worst mass shooting in United States history — Omar’s father, Mir Seddique, insists that what could’ve driven his son to take so many innocent lives is his hate for the LGBT community. After telling NBC News a story about a time he witnessed Omar’s disgust over gay couples, Mir mentioned that the killing spree had “nothing to do with religion” and that he and his family weren’t aware of any of the malicious action his son had apparently been plotting.
Whether ISIS was Omar’s main inspiration for his shooting spree, it was indicated that his job in security gave him access to the weapons he used to take 50 lives and injure more than 50 more. Police are saying that Omar used a handgun as well as an AR-15-type rifle in the attack, both of which were legally purchased.
