England’s fans have been put through the mill when it’s come to international soccer tournaments. After flopping MASSIVELY at the 2014 World Cup, failing to qualify past the group stages, coach Roy Hodgson knows his boys now have to come good.
And he has a hell of a pool of players to choose from, with a mix of youth and experience. With players like Jamie Vardy, who has just come through a breakout season with Leicester City, eager to get goals this gives England a wonderful opportunity to achieve something special.
Russia, on the other hand, has quite an aged squad. In fact, their two central defenders Vasili Berezutski and Sergei Ignashevich have a combined age of 69! That should make England’s young players believe that with their pace they can get the better of the Russians.
It’s going to be a fascinating game, played in a projected 90 degrees heat, so it’ll be tough on the players involved. That could be the decider in this one, and it will be hard for the teams to assert a rhythm.
