Simply awesome! It was so close in the Belmont Stakes 2016! We needed a photo finish to determine the winner. Creator left it to the last minute on June 11 to defeat Destin by a nose! It was another amazing race, with sadly no American Triple Crown on the line, but that didn’t stop Creator from edging it first past the post.
And we have a winner! It was another incredible race at the Belmont Stakes on June 11, but as always only one horse could be the victor! Well done, Creator for fighting off all the challengers and coming first past the post. There was no American Triple Crown on the line, but that didn’t deter Creator who won the race in a photo finish. Favorite Exaggerator was nowhere in sight, finishing well below the pack in second last place.
This year’s race was slightly tainted because we already knew that there couldn’t be a American Triple Crown winner. The rivalry between race favorite Exaggerator and Nyquist also couldn’t be resumed because the Kentucky Derby winner pulled out of the race in May after suffering with a fever.
But don’t let that think that Creator didn’t deserve the win. He got off to a flying start, in what was perfect conditions for racing, and flew past the first corner with ease. Horse racing fans will recall that Exaggerator excelled in the muddy conditions in the latter part of the race at Preakness, but it wasn’t to be for him.
Gettysburg and Destin kept the pace throughout, going into the final turn. But, out of nowhere, Creator made his dash and flew past the pack to challenge leader Destin. He just pipped him at the line, in what was one of the most exciting races of the year. Incidentally, Creator is part-owned by chef Bobby Flay!
Last year, American Pharoah ended up winning the Belmont Stakes, which meant it clinched the American Triple Crown. We couldn’t get a repeat of that this year, but maybe next year someone will surprise us!
It was a great race, but we can’t help but think what could’ve been if Nyquist had the opportunity to race. It would’ve been great to him come up against Exaggerator and see if he could avenge his Preakness Stakes defeat! Until the next time, we guess!
HollywoodLifers, are you surprised that Creator won the big race? Do you think he lacked competition with Nyquist not being there? Tell us what you think below!
