Chewbacca Mom is raking in the dough! Just weeks after sharing a video that went viral thanks to a hilarious Chewbacca mask and a contagious laugh, Candace Payne has already made more than $400K. Get the details right here!
Who would’ve thought that a simple toy could make someone rich? Candace Payne, otherwise known as “Chewbacca Mom,” impulse bought a mask of the famed Star Wars character and shared a silly video wearing it on Facebook live May 19, and suddenly she’s getting loads of free stuff. In fact, her viral video has resulted in earnings upwards of $420,000!
Because Candace mentioned Kohls in her video, which has now racked up more than 150 MILLION views on Facebook and 3 million shares, the company showered her in gifts for the free publicity. Just days after sharing the vid, Kohls representatives brought Candace and her family tons of toys (including Chewbacca masks for the whole fam) and $2,500 in gift cards, totaling about $3,000 in free stuff. And that was only the beginning! You can get your own Chewbacca mask and other cool Star Wars toys right here!
Due to her sudden Internet fame, Candace was flown to Los Angeles to appear on The Late Late Show with James Corden for an epic video segment with Star Wars creator J.J. Abrams as well as New York City for an appearance on Good Morning America. On top of that, she was given a trip to San Francisco for a visit to Lucasfilm Studios and Facebook headquarters. Adding up the cost of the flights, hotels, and VIP tours included in her trips, plus various gifts she received along the way (Hasbro provided her with a $2,500 gift certificate and more toys), it comes to about $7,500 according to Time Money. But does it stop there? Of course not!
In addition to the trips Candace went on herself, her entire family got to go to Walt Disney World for Memorial Day Weekend on Disney’s dime! The vacation featured a visit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park and — perhaps the most exciting part for Candace & co. — a meet-and-greet with Chewbacca. With the cost of the last-minute flights, hotels food, and theme park passes for the family of four, Time values the trip at another $7,500.
As if that’s not amazing enough, Candace’s family was invited by the real Chewbacca, Peter Mayhew, to attend the Fan Expo Dallas convention and meet him there. Given the VIP treatment, of course, that trip tacks on another $2,000 to her free goodies. So we have about $20,000 in earnings so far — what about the other $400,000?
Even though Candace’s children are hardly anywhere near college age, the president of Southeastern University, a “Christ-centered institution of higher learning” in central Florida, were inspired by her joy in the video and wanted her family to experience the same joy — through full college scholarships. Yep, a Chewbacca mask purchase is going to send Candace’s kids to college! Man, it sounds like we need to make a viral video pronto!
