Sure, Sylvester Stallone just played a boxer onscreen, but his relationship to Muhammad Ali, his mentor and pal, was 100% real. Click through to watch the sweet throwback Sly posted as a tribute to his late friend.
We always had a feeling that Sylvester Stallone was really a big softie! The Rocky star paid tribute to his hero, Muhammad Ali, with a touching Instagram video posted the day after The Greatest’s death. Click through to watch the heartfelt clip!
Sylvester got the surprise of a lifetime when he was joined by Muhammad to present at the 1977 Academy Awards. Muhammad creeps up behind him, straight-faced, and startles the hell out of Sly! He starts cracking up as Muhammad yells at him, “I’M the real Apollo Creed! You stole my script!”
The two begin to fake spar — Sly’s a great boxer, but Muhammad could swat him over like a feather, let’s be real — and end it laughing, with a genuine hug. Before getting on to giving out the awards, Sylvester has something incredibly sweet to say about meeting Muhammad: “I may not win anything here tonight in the form of an Oscar, but I really feel it’s an amazing privilege to be standing next to a 100 percent certified legend and it’s something I want to treasure for the rest of my life.”

What a sweet moment! We feel so badly for Sylvester over the loss of his dear friend. Muhammad passed away on June 3 after entering the hospital the day prior with trouble breathing. He had suffered from Parkinson’s Disease for 30 years. Sylvester’s tribute, as well as the countless from everyone to his boxing protégées, to celebrity fans, show how much this legend will be truly missed.
