“God came for his champion. So long great one. @MuhammadAli #TheGreatest #RIP,” Mike tweeted on the night of June 3. He, like the rest of us, had just learned the tragic news that Muhammad had passed away just one day after being admitted to the hospital. Mike included a wonderful photo of the two boxers, from sometime long ago (Mike had hair and no face tattoo!), and it was truly touching.
It was clear immediately after Muhammad’s passing how beloved and respected he was, as both a man and an athlete. Mike was just one of many pro boxers who paid tribute to the GOAT on Twitter! George Foreman, 67, remembered his longtime friend and legendary boxing rival with a heartfelt statement on Twitter on June 3, writing: “Ralph Ali, Frazier & Foreman we were 1 guy. A part of me slipped away, ‘The greatest piece'” So sad! Our hearts go out to this great man for the dear friend he lost!
Boxing champ Manny Pacquiao, 37, released a statement paying respects to Muhammad as well: “We lost a giant today,” Manny said. “Boxing benefited from Muhammad Ali’s talents but not nearly as much as mankind benefited from his humanity. Our hearts and prayers go out to the Ali family. God bless them.”
And of course, Floyd “Money” Mayweather, 39, had to say something, as well, about the man who inspired him so much. “You are someone that inspired me greatly throughout my boxing journey and words cannot express how great you were as a person!” he wrote — CLICK HERE to read his full remarks!
