He’ll be wearing the captain’s armband for the USA when he leads the team out against Colombia in their opening game of the Copa America on June 3, but what do you know about soccer hero Michael Bradley? Let us tell you all you need to know about the midfield dynamo aiming to win the Copa America.
When the USA steps out onto the field at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. on June 3 to face off against Colombia, leading the players will be their inspirational midfield star Michael Bradley, 28. The player known for his lung-busting runs up and down the soccer pitch, as well as his combative nature, will be looking to make sure the USA does us proud in the Copa America. But who is Michael? 1. His father is a huge soccer coach!
Michael’s dad is Bob Bradley, he famously coached USA national soccer team from 2006-2011. Bob’s most notable remembered for a Gold Cup win in 2007 over Mexico, as well as finishing second in the Confederations Cup in 2009, where they beat the then number one team in the world, Spain 2-0. In the 2010 World Cup, USA got to the second round before they were beaten by Ghana. He was relieved off his duties in 2011 after a disappointing Gold Cup. He now manages Le Havre in France.
2. Michael’s got european experience too!
Like many talented US soccer players, Michael left the US to play in the more competitive european soccer leagues. He enjoyed two years in the Netherlands playing for Heerenveen, had a spell in Germany starring for Borussia Monchengladbach and played in England on loan at Aston Villa. He also enjoyed lots of success in Italy’s Serie A playing for both Chievo and Roma, where he was nicknamed ‘The General.’ As of 2014 though, Michael is back in the MLS playing for Toronto FC
3. He’s played for the national team over 100 times!
That’s right! Michael made his debut for the national team aged just 18 against Venezuela as a substitute. It was actually his dad, Bob that gave him his first cap. Since then, he’s gone on to represent his country 115 times, scoring 15 goals in the process, which isn’t bad.
4. Another thing about his goalscoring…
Michael broke a long-standing record for most goals scored in a single season by an American player back in 2008 when he registered 18 in one calendar year. However, that record was broken by international teammate Clint Dempsey in 2012.
5. He’s really smart!
Due to having an extensive playing career in Europe, Michael speaks 5 languages including English, Dutch, Italian, German and Spanish. What a great thing to be able to do!
With all the determination he puts into games, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Michael get a few goals during the tournament to boost his reputation furthermore.
