Careless gun use has become far too common in the United States, and June 2 has officially become National Gun Violence Awareness Day. To support the cause, celebrities like Julianne Moore, Amy Schumer and more are urging fans to wear orange — and, of course, they’re also taking part themselves.
The second annual National Gun Violence Awareness Day just so happens to fall one day after another scary incident with guns took place at UCLA on June 1. As the campus recovers from the shocking murder-suicide, celebs are uniting on June to promote safety regarding these weapons by rockin’ orange shirts. See the pics here!
Amy Schumer has long been a proponent of gun safety, especially after a shooting broke out at a theater screening her movie, Trainwreck, last year. “Please remember tomorrow to #wearorange to promote gun safety,” she wrote on Instagram.
Also joining the cause was Julianne Moore, who shared a photo of herself in an orange, knit hat with the caption, “On my way to work this morning #WearOrange.” Stars like Ron Howard and Spike Lee got involved, too, sharing their own pics wearing orange gear.
National Gun Violence Awareness Day began in honor of Chicago teenager Hadiya Pendelton, who was shot and killed in Jan. 2013. Her friends started the movement, which has now reached a national level.
“If you believe there’s more we can do to help save American lives from gun violence, you are Orange,” the WearOrange.com website says. “The color orange symbolizes the value of human life. Hunters wear orange in the woods to protect themselves and others.”
