Even though the season 12 finale of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ tied things up for Callie, Shonda Rhimes had big plans for Callie in season 13. Shonda only knew about Sara’s exit a few days before the actress tweeted the news!
Shonda Rhimes wasn’t expecting Sara Ramirez’s exit from Grey’s Anatomy. For the first time since the finale, the show’s creator spilled on Callie’s departure at the Vulture Festival in NYC. Shonda says that Sara leaving wasn’t a “big, planned thing,” despite what it looked like on TV.
The series creator also said Callie’s departure “was interesting. It was different because it wasn’t a big, planned thing. I had a different plan going and when Sara came and said, ‘I really need to take this break,’ I was sort of lucky that we had shot the end of the season with her going to New York.”
The season 12 finale was kind of the perfect time for Sara to leave the show. Maybe Sara realized that after filming the finale.
Sara had been with the show since season three. When Sara announced she was taking a break from the show, she released this statement on Twitter:
“I’m deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at Grey’s Anatomy and ABC, but for now, I’m taking some welcome time off. [Series creator] Shonda [Rhimes has] been so incredible to work for, and we will definitely continue our conversations. I send my love to Ellen [Pompeo], the rest of the cast and crew, and I look forward to always being a part of the Shondaland family!”
