OMG! Idina Menzel responded to the viral fan campaign, which is asking Disney to give ‘Frozen’s Princess Elsa a girlfriend, and the star doesn’t think it’s a bad idea! Could it really be happening?
Fans are fighting for Frozen’s Princess Elsa to have a girlfriend in the movie’s sequel, and it looks like Idina Menzel, 44, wants the same thing! The voice behind the character has now voiced her support for the campaign.
Although Idina doesn’t have much control over the direction and script, she seemed more than willing to take on the part. And regardless of whether Elsa has a female love interest or not, she says nothing will replace her connection to the beloved character. “No matter what, [Elsa] changed my life,” she added.
Frozen fans launched the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend campaign in May 2016, asking Disney to follow a different storyline by making Elsa a lesbian. “Love is an open door. That door should be open to everyone, not just straight people. #GiveElsaAGirlfriend,” one user tweeted.
The script has already been written but there is still room for change, according to Kristen Bell, 37, who voices Elsa’s younger sister, Anna. “They’ve just written it and they’re still doing tweaks,” she told Collider in her March 2016 interview. “The story is great, and they exude quality. What I know about that whole team is that they wouldn’t just put something out to put it out.” Could a same-sex partner be one of those “tweaks?”
Disney has not responded to the campaign, but it’s hard to think that they wouldn’t address the matter in some way or another, especially because it has made many strides to include everyone. Just last year, in January 2015, the mega-brand made history when it introduced its first Latina princes, Elena.
If Elsa were to be given a girlfriend, she would be Disney’s first gay character in its animated films. Frozen 2 does not have a release date yet, so fans will have to wait a while longer to see if Elsa will make history.
HollywoodLifers, do you think Esla should get a girlfriend in Frozen 2?
