Season 22 of Dancing with the Stars comes down to this! The final three pairs danced their hearts out, hoping to get top scores and viewers votes. Read our recap of the finals — the May 23 show below!
First up, Ginger Zee, 35, and Val Chmerkovskiy‘s redemption dance was contemporary to “Adventure of a Lifetime” by Coldplay. Ginger had to fight through the pain of a pelvis and back injury — ouch! Judge Len Goodman said: “Far more fluidity. The lifts, I loved them. Organic, I love it.” Bruno Tonioli said “it was like watching Ginger and Val’s greatest hits remixed. Lines are much better. It really worked for your personality. Much, much better.” Carrie Ann Inaba was impressed with the strategy of them doing a medley of their best dances. “I really loved it.” They got a 28!
Model Nyle DiMarco, 27, and Peta Murgatroyd danced their redemption style dance, which was a Quickstep, to “S.O.B.” by Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats. “It was like an exhilarating ride on the pony express. So much content..such a difficult routine…it was fabulous,” Bruno said. Carrie Ann commented: “That was such a great dance for you. Great form. It was out of sync just a little bit but everybody else loved it!” Len said he is “one heck of a dancer.” They got a 27 out of 30!
UFC fighter Paige VanZant, 22, along with partner Mark Ballas, danced their redemption style salsa to “Fireball” by Pitbull — love that song! Mark injured himself on this dance early in the season and Paige had to dance with a troupe member. But this time, they nailed it! And Mark ripped off his shirt after the routine! “At this stage, we still need to see improvement. You brought even more of an A game, you brought an A+ tonight,” Carrie Ann said. Len said he didn’t see enough hip action for it to be a salsa but he loved the performance. Bruno screamed: “Goodness, gracious, great balls of fire! You out-danced Mark! You were bursting with sex appeal! You have the hips and the arms!” They got a 29, the highest score of the first round!
‘DWTS’ Finale 2016: Freestyle Dances — One Last Shot
Ginger and Val danced their freestyle performance to “Orange Colored Sky” by Nat King Cole. They paid homage to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. “Tonight, you showed versatility. Pain is temporary. Glory lasts a lifetime,” Len said. Bruno “adored” the number: “It had a classic movie, Hollywood musical [feel].” Carrie Ann called her a “classy, elegant, sophisticated, mature” woman! They got a perfect 30!
Nyle and Peta danced freestyle to “The Sound of Silence” by Disturbed and it was AMAZING. So powerful! My favorite dance of the night! “You really brought me to tears. That was beyond dancing, that was a work of art. I have chills. Stunning,” Bruno said. Carrie Ann said “in 22 seasons, that was the best dance I have ever seen…I see a man who is proving that he can change the world through dance.” Len said, “Nyle, you’re a very special person and that was a very special dance.” Obviously, they got a perfect 30!
Mark and Paige danced their freestyle to “Over the Rainbow” performed live by Mark’s fiance BC Jean! It was beautiful and left Mark, Carrie Ann and Bruno in tears! “These freestyles are blowing my mind…you have grown in this beautiful way,” Carrie Ann said. “That was a triumph…exquisite!” Bruno said. They got a perfect 30!
And that’s all, folks!
