The legendary thrash metal drummer Nick Menza died at the too-young age of 51, in a terrifying incident at the Baked Potato jazz club in Los Angeles on May 21. Nick was drumming with his band OHM, and suddenly collapsed onstage. He shockingly died during their set, after suffering from what appears to be a heart attack! More details after the jump.
What an insane thing to hear! Nick collapsed right before OHM played their third song in the set, according to Mike Simpson, a fan who was in the audience. “I was watching his band OHM at the Baked Potato tonight and he collapsed on stage. Paramedics were saying it looked like a heart attack,” he wrote on Facebook. The unfathomable happened, and Nick passed away right before the eyes of the audience.
Nick was a beloved friend and musician, and news of his untimely, sudden death hit hard. Former Megadeth bandmate and longtime friend, the great Dave Mustaine, revealed on Twitter that he woke up to the news of Nick’s death in the middle of the night. How devastating!
Megadeth guitarist Marty Friendman paid him a lovely tribute on Facebook: “We all know the great and unique drummer that Nick Menza was, but he was also a trustworthy friend, a hilarious bandmate, as well as a very loving dad. I’m beyond sad, did not see this coming at all. RIP Brother.”
Nick played with Megadeth since the band’s founding in the early 1990s, on some of their most beloved albums: Rust in Peace, Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia. He left Megadeth in 1997 when he had to have knee surgery and could no longer tour. Nick founded OHM along with another Megadeth album, guitarist Chris Poland, in 2002. The band played regularly at the Baked Potato club.
