Incredible! All eyes were on Nyquist, who was aiming to follow up his win at the Kentucky Derby by being first past the post at the Preakness Stakes at the Pimlico Race Course in Maryland on May 21. And did he disappoint? It was Exaggerator who stole the race!
Two words. Simply. Amazing! The Preakness Stakes were up for grabs, with Nyquist aiming to get that much closer to the American Triple Crown by winning the second jewel on May 21. His biggest challenger came in the form of Exaggerator, who finished runner-up at the Kentucky Derby. It was Exaggerator’s day today, hard luck Nyquist.
All eyes were on Nyquist, as he aimed to emulate American Pharaoh‘s Triple Crown performance last year and add the Preakness Stakes to his already impressive start to life as a race horse. The three-year-old thoroughbred had raced at 8 meets prior to Preakness, winning all 8 and looking unbeatable.
Nyquist got off to a flying start, just like in Kentucky, getting a good feel of the racing conditions with each stride, which were wet and the ground was pretty soft. But that didn’t deter him as he started off in the lead. But Exaggerator caught up with him and at the end had too much in that last turn.
Thanks to his success, Exaggerator can now bank an extra $900,000 in purse money to his name for winning the race. It was so well deserved, after an epic display of speed and power, and exactly what the fans wanted to see, who must’ve won themselves a nice amount of money for his win.
Thankfully, it was a great race. Every one got past the finishing post unscathed, which is always a bonus in what can sometimes be such a dangerous sport!
