Surprise! Beyonce had a special guest backstage at her Formation World Tour in Houston, and no one in the BeyHive saw this coming. Queen Bey posed for a sweet pic with her estranged dad, Matthew Knowles — and they looked closer than ever!
Talk about a family reunion! Beyonce, 34, paid a visit to her hometown in Houston for an epic performance on her Formation World Tour on May 18. And there to celebrate the singer’s homecoming, was mom, Tina Lawson, 62, and her dad, Matthew Knowles, 64! This could have been a disaster in the making, but Beyonce and her dad seemed closer than ever in a loving pic, and Tina actually took the picture for them!
Matthew held his daughter close as he wrapped one arm around her for a huge embrace. And he wasn’t the only one feeling the love. Beyonce also leaned in, showing off a cheesy grin. Aww, so cute!
Although Matthew, who was also Beyonce’s previous manager, has kind of been out of the picture lately, it’s clear he still wanted to show support for his daughter, especially in her hometown. Matthew has always gushed about how proud he is of Bey and her recent album, Lemonade’s success, so it only seemed right that he come visit. “I can only speak of being a proud father. I think Beyoncé pushed the envelope of creativity on this HBO special,” he told SiriusXM.
That’s sweet he wanted to show love for Bey, but we can’t help but think how awkward it might have been for him to watch his daughter perform songs that directly reference him. Beyonce’s Lemonade was all about referencing pivotal moments in her life, and Matthew happened to be in a few. Particularly in the single, “Daddy Lessons,” Bey sings about how her dad taught her not to trust men like him. Matthew was said to have cheated on Tina when they were married, so the performance could trigger a lot of bad memories.
But it’s possible the family has left that in the past. After all, Tina has remarried, and Beyonce might need as many shoulders as possible to lean on after rumors of Jay Z‘s, 46, cheating picked up speed when her song “Sorry” pointed the finger at a mysterious woman.
Matthew refused to comment on the issue, saying that he’d “rather not get into speculation,” but we have to say the reunion is coming at the perfect time.
