Demi Lovato isn’t afraid to open up about her troubled past, but she’s more honest than ever in a new interview. The singer made a terrifying confession that she couldn’t even go ‘an hour’ without cocaine in her darkest days. See what she said right here.
The road to getting sober wasn’t an easy one for Demi Lovato. When the 23-year-old singer hit the lowest point of her drug addiction, she couldn’t go more than “an hour” without cocaine, as she revealed in a new interview. Demi has managed to turn her life around since dealing with her drug abuse, but she is the first to admit that she was once a total “nightmare” because of her addiction.
“Prior to getting sober, I was one of those people who was like, I don’t give a f**k, whatever. And I used that as an excuse to do whatever I wanted,” Demi told Refinery 29. “I was a nightmare to work with.” She confessed to the site that her addiction got so bad, she couldn’t go “an hour” without cocaine.
Even when her parents or members of her team would try to step in to help Demi, she said she would not hear any of it. “‘Try to ground me — I pay your bills,'” the singer recalls snipping at them. Things finally came to a breaking point when she infamously punched a dancer on the Camp Rock 2 tour with the Jonas Brothers in 2010, landing her in rehab for three months.
Following treatment, it was still tough for Demi to remain completely sober, learning the hard way that she wouldn’t be able to attend parties anymore. “Some people can go out and not be triggered, but that’s not the case for me,” she added. Since then, though, Demi has been able to regain hold of her life, with the help of her longtime boyfriend, Wilmer Valderrama, along with a newfound confidence that allowed her career to go in a direction she controlled.
Although she’s managed to stay sober, Demi has stirred a little controversy with her fellow female superstars. In the same interview, Demi discussed the shade she threw at Taylor Swift after the “Shake It Off” singer donated $250,000 to Kesha amidst her legal troubles. After admitting that she got a little too “passionate” in her Twitter rant, she also wasn’t afraid to say that she and Taylor “don’t get along” — but threw in another little jab that TSwift: “My thing is, don’t brand yourself a feminist if you don’t do the work.”
Pushing aside the drama, Demi insists that her focus remains on staying true to herself. While this primarily involves maintaining her sobriety, it also means brushing off the haters.
“I still have more things to prove — not just about the things I can do with my voice,” she proclaimed. “Some people think that because I’m young, I can’t stay sober. But these are things I want to prove to myself.”
