It’s here! Trio week was first, which was refreshing. I like getting straight into it — so I won’t beat around the bush writing this blog and I’ll get right to it, too.
How funny was it watching Paige VanZant and Alan flirt during their rehearsals for her Trio dance? I had to laugh! It’s not for me to say what’s going on between them but I will say they do have great chemistry, and I think that’s very evident. — I want them to show us more! As for the dancing, I thought the choreography from Mark Ballas was brilliant for a trio. Much more imaginative that it could have been; it’s hard to add in a 3rd partner especially for dances such as Samba. Plus nice Peacock feathers! Paige had a lot of conviction in her walks and her spins always come natural to her.
My biggest dance criticism would be she can pitch over too much at times, giving her a lightly awkward neck line. But the sexiness was there and I’m sure a lot of us were wondering whether it was Alan that helped that situation! Did you hear how hilariously awkward both their responses were when Erin asked if they were together?! Hahahaha I mean how could you miss it!!! That was pure TV gold.
For their second dance Paige and Mark danced an Argentine Tango. We saw Paige’s dad talk about how Paige got harassed by other children in her earlier years. I think everyone watching couldn’t help but be proud of her Joubert and how she has overcome that time in her life. She was definitely very womanly in this dance. Wowza. I couldn’t take my eyes off her. Mark as always did a great job, this was so unique and sexy. Bruno described it as watching basic instinct and I agree! The killer leg action was very technical. Paige was pushed to create great shapes and angles. I think her ability to act the role is perfect for this show. Paige took charge in this routine, and under the great direction from Mark she was able to shine once more, in a very different way from her Trio dance. You are a beautiful strong women Paige, we are all very proud of you.
Antonio Brown did a Trio Argentine Tango with Sharna Burgess and Hayley tonight. I enjoyed the stylistic side of this dance. The glances to the camera, the switches in and out with the partners. I loved all that, but mostly, I liked that this routine wasn’t trying to be something that it wasn’t. It was effortless and not rushed. Watching a clean, attentive Argentine tango was just what I wanted to see from Antonio. He’s too calm, suave and collected to do a manic outward show. The inside smokey, moody routine was perfect for the three of them. Antonio is a great support for the beautiful ladies, keeping up with their leg and footwork. He doesn’t have the most natural flare for dance so I give him good credit here for pulling off a very intriguing performance. And it was lovely to see Hayley dance!
Antonio explained how he felt he didn’t have a father figure while growing up. We saw a very touching moment where his dad got teary about the choices he’d made in his past. It was very genuine. Antonio has my respect immensely. Then I watched their second dance and he has a whole load more respect from me. I’ve personally never seen him commit more to a dance during his whole time on the show. His lunges and the butterfly jump at the beginning was awesome! I agree with Len, the lifts in this dance were spectacular. Sharna did a fantastic job. It must have been scary for her at times because he is so strong! Yes yes yes, this dance was so special, it definitely stood out. Antonio was present, the ending proved that the most. This was the perfect way to end their journey as tonight Antonio & Sharna left the ballroom after a brilliant season. You should be so proud Antonio, I know your family are. Wonderful job.
Witney was added to the Wanya Morris & Lindsay Arnold mix tonight. I really liked the artistic beginning but as a whole I was left a little underwhelmed tonight by the performance. I thought it was fair and Wanya is a great performer. But the lovely ladies (as lovely as they are) didn’t allow much movement for him and I felt like he was stuck in the middle and not very mobile. A lot of the choreography required him to do little movement except to simply support them. But the side by side choreo they did do was strong. As always Wanya is sharp and has a huge dynamic range of movement. I think he is by far one of the strongest dancers, if not THE strongest dancer on the show this season. I’m a Wanya fan for sure. I just wasn’t blown over by this Trio like the judges seemed to be.
I really feel like Wanya is quite an emotional person! That’s perfect to me, I connect the best with emotional people. I loved listening to his family talk about him and what he’s achieved. The second dance for Wanya and Lindsay was a Charleston and it was action packed! So much going on. It was fast paced and super strong. Not totally authentic but that was the aim because the music wasn’t either. I thought the music was an odd choice for this dance style actually but they managed to pull it off. Nice and Jazzy! They got a perfect score for this dance. Unfortunately, even with his amazing Twerk, it was the last dance for these two and I’m TOTALLY DEVASTATED. Really I’m gutted. And I think loads of people would be! The great Wanya has left the ballroom. I’m so happy he graced us with his dancing this season. And Lindsay completely shone. Such a great season for her. I will really miss them in the final and I think they should be there.
Miss Jenna Johnson joined Nyle DiMarco and Peta Murgatroyd for a cheeky Jive, which I LOVED! Such fun in the ballroom! Gosh I just loved it. It was sassy and classy. Nyle has this gorgeous positive uplifting character. The character of the jive was really captured well, all done in a stylish way which was very effective. I forgave them for the odd occasion they were out of time, I think they were juggling lots of elements, the technique, the story, the multiple partners and the milkshake at the end! It wasn’t the most authentic Jive but I don’t think that’s what the Trio round is about. You have to balance the use of the 3rd person so incorporating them means you have to adjust what moves you can do. Overall this dance was a winner for be because I was thoroughly entertained.
Nyle did the most beautiful and hauntingly dramatic Argentine tango tonight. Peta blindfolded her partner and created a mesmerizing performance through the sense of feeling. Nyle is always trying to push himself and has based pretty much his entire life on exceeding his limits. I’m not remotely surprised that this dance got a perfect 30 score. His frame has gotten better too, his butt doesn’t stick out as much as it did before! I’m very glad that Nyle is in the final, go harder than you’ve ever gone before Nyle because you could totally walk away with the Mirrorball trophy. You have what it takes. I can’t wait to see what you creat.
Go Ginger Zee! It was a Ginger sandwich, with Russian speaking bread! Hmmm yummy! Although in real life, these men are actually quite careful with their carbs (well to look like that it makes sense!) Well apparently Val Chmerkovskiy is honey. Artem is mustard. Ginger is the chicken nugget. That’s a tasty snack. Well in any case, this made my dance soul happy especially at the start. During the meat of the dance though I do have to say it wasn’t my personal favorite as I found it quite hectic. It could have benefitted from some stillness and calm. The action packed routine was right for the music though, so I totally get that. It’s hard not to listen completely to the music as a choreographer and just run with that. To be able to dance between these two wonderful dancers, there had to be a big commitment from Ginger and she performed well. It was strong and sharp which is needed for Paso Doble. Just a little off balance and not quite grounded enough (that means not as connected to the floor as it should be).
There were parts of this quickstep with Ginger and Val that I really loved. In frame, rotating around each other, she extends beautifully. The posture for me though was a little off and she didn’t really seem to be as stable as she was last week. It was during her spins that I noticed this. Her energy was really fresh and uplifting though, she didn’t let up at all. I got the feeling that Ginger wasn’t as happy with how she danced this tonight, I can’t put my finger on it but I got the sense. They have a great trust/chemistry between them, I see it constantly. I see her light up while she’s dancing, it makes me so happy. I wish it did but unfortunately this dance didn’t stand out to me, but I do love Ginger and I hope they have a wonderful final next week. I can’t wait to see what she does for her freestyle!
Well that concludes the action packed semi finals. The dramatic ending to tonights episode saw Wanya and Lindsay, Antonio and Sharna go home. It was going to be hard for anyone to go but now it will definitely be different next week. Only 3 couples left! Who are you routing for? I’m torn between Nyle and Paige personally, but then I love Ginger too! So hard to choose. Well if nothing else, next weeks finale promises to be off the chain!
Be back next week with my blog lovelies, so have a great week!
