It’s supposed to be a family day and momentous occasion as the final day of the Premier League gets underway. But Manchester United’s game at Old Trafford on May 15 was abandoned after a suspect package was found inside the stadium — just moments before the kick off. How scary!
United were due to play Bournemouth, in what was a pivotal game for a top-4 finish to qualify for the Champions League, but 20 games before the game was due to start, stewards asked fans to vacate the stadium and a code red alert was called, normally reserved for serious threats.
Now, while it’s too premature to say this was a planned terrorist attack, a suspect package was discovered inside Old Trafford, the home of the Red Devils, in one of the stands. Fans were told to go straight to the car parks around the stadium and await further instruction. The game was then called off moments later.
The decision to call off the match came from police advice, so this clearly was something that had to be done and it really wouldn’t have gone this far unless there was a serious issue.
United have already made a statement. “Due to the discovery of a suspect package in the north-west quadrant of the ground, the match has been abandoned for today on police advice,” the statement read. “People in the stadium are advised to remain in their seats while the forecourt is cleared of fans evacuated from the stadium. Further announcements will be made as soon as possible.
We hope everyone makes it out ok, and that no further harm will come to anyone. This truly is an awful situation and doesn’t deserve any place at a soccer match.
*UPDATE* The stadium was evacuated fully and a controlled explosion was carried out by a bomb disposal unit.
