1. He’s won the Kentucky Derby before!
That’s right! Before Nyquist was even born, Mario rode I’ll Have Another to victory in the 2012 Kentucky Derby, as well as the Preakness Stakes and the Santa Anita Derby
2. Mario shares a close bond with Nyquist’s Owner.
Mario and Nyquist were brought together by the horse’s owner John Paul Reddam. John Paul incidentally owned I’ll Have Another as well and trusts Mario to ride his horses to success.
3. How many career wins has Mario achieved?
Despite being only 29, Mario has notched up over 660 wins, including victories at the Kentucky Derby twice, the Santa Anita Derby, Preakness Stakes and the Sorrento Stakes. His career took a bit of a dive until he met Nyquist, but now they are the dream team.
4. He comes from a family of jockeys.
Well, actually jut his dad. But it’s where he got the idea from to be a jockey when he was born in Veracruz, Mexico before emigrating to Canada where he learned how to race at the Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver.
5. He married the woman who first picked him up at the airport when he came from Mexico!
True and unbelievably cute story! Mario was reunited with an old friend called Rebecca, who picked him up from the airport when he moved from Mexico to Canada in 2006. They married, and he credits her for all his success. “I give a lot of credit to my wife for my success the past two years . . . because of her I’ve invested more in myself now,” he’s said in the past.
