This is absolutely heartbreaking! Ashley Sawyer, a hopeful from MTV’s reality series ‘Catfish,’ has tragically passed away. Taken far too soon, the two creators of ‘Catfish,’ Nev Schulman and Max Joseph, honored the 23-year-old with sweet, heartfelt messages on social media. Grab your tissues, HollywoodLifers, this is just too sad!
Ashley Sawyer, who was 23 when she died, appeared on a 2013 episode of the MTV series Catfish. At this point her cause of death is unknown, which only makes her death more confusing for friends and family. Two of her friends, the creators of Catfish, Nev Schulman, 31, and Max Joseph, 34, mourned their pal on Twitter shortly after hearing the news. And, according to them, Ashley was a ‘beautiful’ and ‘strong’ young woman. How awful to lose her so soon!
“Such a beautiful and strong young woman. Honored to have known her,” Nev tweeted on May 2 in response to the announcement tweeted from Catfish‘s official MTV account. Max was the first of the two to post about the sad news, writing, “Shocked and saddened by the death of Ashley Sawyer. So sweet and kind. Thoughts and prayers go out to her family.”
Later, Nev tweeted once more. He posted a photo of Ashley meeting Michael, the man she had been communicating with on her Catfish episode. “So sad to lose both Mike & Ashley. I hope they are happy & together now where nothing can hurt them,” Nev captioned the pic.

Ashley died over the weekend, according to People magazine, and her death may be been caused by drugs. Ashley’s sister, Jessica Ross, told MTV News that Ashley had recently completed rehab after struggling with addiction. So sad! “We had a great relationship,” she said. “I know she knows how much I loved her and she loved me… She was just a really fun person to be around.”
Ashley appeared on the second season of the MTV hit series after reaching out to hosts Nev and Max about meeting Michael — the man she had been corresponding with online. When they actually met, however, they realized they were BOTH catfishing each other. Even so, they were interested in pursuing a relationship. But sadly one month after the episode aired, Michael died from a pulmonary embolism at just 26.
“The last thing we said to each other was that we loved each other,” Ashley said during a recent catch-up special.
Our thoughts are with Ashley’s friends and family during this very difficult time. Leave your condolences below, HollywoodLifers.
