Football in April! The first round of the 2016 NFL draft will begin at 8pm EST on April 28th. Who will get chosen, why is there a draft and how does it all work? Keep reading to learn all that and five other things about the incredible annual event!
This will be the 81st annual NFL draft. It’s the second year in a row it will be held in Chicago instead of New York City where it has been for over 50 years prior. The order of selection is determined by reverse order of the prior season’s finish. Meaning the teams with the worst records get to choose first in each round. Keep reading to learn five more facts about the 2016 NFL Draft.
1. Jared Goff will go first.
There are no guarantees in this process but all signs point to Jared Goff, 21, the California quarterback, being the number one overall pick. He is a hot quarterback and if he is not chosen first, he will go quickly.
2. The Rams have the first pick.
The Rams, with a 7-9 2015 record, traded with the Tennessee Titans, who only had 3 wins last year, to acquire the first pick. The Rams will likely choose Jared in the first round and bring him over to their new home in Los Angeles.
3. Teams have ten minutes to pick.
Ten minutes is shortened from 15 minutes in years past. Teams often use this time not to determine who they will choose next, but to field trade offers from other teams.
5. The 2016 NFL Draft is a three day event.
Round one will begin on April 28th. Then rounds 2 & 3 will take place on April 29th at 7pm EST. Then rounds 4 through 7 will begin April 30th at 12pm EST. So clear your weekend.
The draft process is a way to bolster weak teams and bring parity to the league. The Seattle Seahawks have 9 picks in 2016, more than any other team. But New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons all have forfeited picks due to NFL violations. Grab some popcorn, a cold beverage, put on your team’s jersey and enjoy this exciting event.
