WWE fans are still grieving the shocking loss of wrestling star Chyna. Following her tragic death at just 45 years old, get to know more about the late wrestling icon.
Rest in peace, Chyna. The WWE star was sadly found dead in her Redondo Beach, Calif., apartment at the young age of 45, leaving wrestling fans stunned and heartbroken. If you’re not too familiar with Chyna, whose real name is Joan Laurer, find out more about the WWE legend right here.
1. She’s considered the ‘most dominant female competitor of all time.’
During her time as a wrestler, Chyna individually defeated prominent male names in the wrestling world, including Chris Jericho, Triple H, and Jeff Jarrett. Because of her success, she became the number one contender to the WWF Championship!
2. She was part of the WWE before it was the WWE!
Didn’t know there was a wrestling organization before the WWE? Well, it’s the same organization, but before it was titled World Wrestling Entertainment, the WWE was called World Wrestling Federation (WWF). The name didn’t change until 2002, one year after Chyna left in 2001. So she’s technically a WWF star!
3. She was the first woman to compete in Royal Rumble.
Starting her wrestling career in 1997, Chyna was a pioneer for females competing in major WWF events, such as the Royal Rumble and King Of The Ring. Plus, she is the only female Intercontinental Champion. On top of all of that, she’s the only undefeated Women’s Champion in WWF history!
4. She served in the US Army ROTC.
When she wasn’t body slamming opponents in the ring, Chyna loved to help and serve others. In her early 20s, she was a member of the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) and also served in the Peace Corps, for which she served in Guatemala.
5. She appeared in Playboy twice.
Outside of her wrestling achievements, Chyna also served as a fitness model and actress. She posed nude for Playboy in 2000 and 2002, later appearing in a handful of television shows including 3rd Rock From The Sun and Sabrina, The Teenage Witch, as well as several films. She also appeared as a housemate on The Surreal Life in 2005.
