Prince’s ex-wife Mayte Garcia has spoken out about their relationship, calling it the ‘most bizarre’ ever. She also admitted that he was her first crush, and she’ll love him forever. Check out the interview here.
Prince has died today, April 21, at the age of 57, and fans all over the world are mourning the loss of an icon. Mayte Garcia, 42, was married to Prince for four years, and met him when she was just 16 years old. Read on to hear what Mayte revealed in an interview about their whirlwind love affair and marriage!
Mayte admitted that she was a virgin when she met Prince in an interview with The Mirror. “I had never been with anybody,” Mayte revealed. “I’d always been a very focused dancer and very protected. Prince was my first crush, and my first love, but we didn’t start to get serious until I turned 18. He was very respectful.”
The dancer was completely captivated by the musician, and fell in love right away. “I remember our first kiss, and thinking, ‘Oh God, oh wow, this is not happening! I remember it being overwhelming and weird. Our entire time together was amazing and surreal, and he showed me some incredible things and introduced me to incredible people,” Mayte told The Mirror. “I think I’m now screwed for life because my first relationship was the most bizarre relationship ever and I’m not normal any more. I’ve kind-of been spoiled and I guess I am kind-of screwed-up now.” It’s hard to imagine what it was like to be married to someone like Prince!
Prince wrote tons of songs dedicated to Mayte, including “The Most Beautiful Girl In The World”. “All the songs he wrote for me, that’s a pretty hard act to follow. I’ve dated a couple of guys, musicians, who have written me poems or songs and I’m like, ‘Seriously, don’t even go there. You can’t compete!’” Mayte added.
Prince and Mayte were married on Valentine’s Day in 1996. Mayte gave birth to a son who lived for only a week due to Pfeiffer syndrome, and she suffered a miscarriage shortly afterwards. “To lose two babies is really scary… it really caught on me emotionally, physically, everything. It took me at least 15 years to get over it and still, to this day, I miss my son,” Mayte said. “I believe a child dying between a couple either makes you stronger or it doesn’t. For me, it was very, very hard to move forward and for us as a couple I think it probably broke us.” Indeed, the couple split in 1998 and formally divorced in 2000. Mayte confirmed she’ll be attending Prince’s funeral and broke down in tears in front of photographers.
